The science in this story

Each friend brings one idea — and every one of them can be found in the story text below.

Watching for cluesBubbo

Stopping in the same place every time is the most important clue. Look closely first — then make a change.

2A · 3
Friction and small obstaclesMossy

A small piece of bark stuck in the rail is enough to block the marble. Very small things can change the result.

4
Change one thing at a timeBubbo

Change only one thing each time, and you can tell which change actually helped.

4 · 5A
Slope and speedRollii

The steeper the slope, the faster the marble goes — and too fast, it may not make the turn.

Let's go — let's see the new track!

Maybe it's not fast enough?

Look at the route first

Giggle

Should we add a jump ramp?

Bubbo

Every time — right here.

Rollii

Under the shadow — there's something small and green!

Mossy

Let me lift the leaf and look.

Narration

Bubbo puts his eyes a little closer, and sees the leaf's shadow falling across the track.

P4A Little Piece of Bark
Rollii

It's a little piece of bark! It's stuck in the track.

Giggle

No wonder the marble can't get through!

Our next job looks like a lot of tidying up!

Look first, then sort

The Big Idea

What it means
Do every little part carefully.
From the story
Bubbo didn't change the whole route. He checked carefully where the marble stopped each time, and found the little piece of bark stuck in the track.

Read together, think together

1
Why did the marble stop in the same place every time?
2
What did Bubbo do first, before he found the problem?

Want to build one yourself?

The track in this chapter is a marble run. Rollii and friends worked out where the marble got stuck — your family can run the same test at home.

Meet the four friends

They are the four friends at the Marble Lab, each with one strength — coming up with ideas, designing, adjusting, and watching closely. Every chapter is these four steps working together.
